The German Marshall Fund - ETF

The German Marshall Fund hosted the Energy Transition Forum between 2012 and 2015

The German Marshall Fund of the United States hosted its first annual Energy Transition Forum (ETF) meeting in May 2012 in Washington DC. Between 2012 and 2015, it held five meetings alternating between the United States and Europe to address and identify solutions to the most pressing challenges in the energy transition. The forums held by the GMF focused on discussing solutions within: 


· New and Renewable Sources of Energy

· Technology and Innovation

· Investment Levels 

GMF ETF Highlight: 2014 study tour in Brussels and berlin

In June 2014, the GMF hosted a Study Tour titled: Practical Insights from Europe’s Energy Transition



Key Themes: 

  • The changing European energy mix and its regulatory frameworks
  • The rapid mutation of the European power grid and power markets 
  • Exploring the transformation of the United States and European energy landscape
  • The future of utility business models and the threat of new market entrants 


Site Visits: 

  •  50 Hertz, the company responsible for a third of German transmission and dealing with over 35 percent of renewables on average on its system. 
  • BMW "DriveNow" Car sharing center to hear how BMW intends to become a player in the power market.
